Recent Happenings

The Animal Emergency Center is proud to have had Dr. Elke Rudloff and Dr. Rebecca Kirby, our emergency/critical care specialists, and Mr. Angel Rivera, our hospital administrator and emergency/critical care specialist technician, involved in organizing and lecturing at the world renown International Veterinary Emergency and Critical Care Symposium (IVECCS) in New Orleans in September, 2007. Dr. Rudloff and Mr. Rivera will also be integral to the planning and development of IVECCS 2008 in Scottsdale in September 2008.


The theme for the educational convention was Critical Care Pharmacology. Dr. Rebecca Kirby provided the "kick off" lecture, giving 4 hours of indepth information on veterinary pharmacology. This lecture set the tone and provided information so that the attendees were prepared for the upcoming information. In addition, Dr. Kirby was the moderator for a lively round table discussion on fluid therapy for the critical patient. Dr. Rudloff has been the Scientific Program Chair for the Program Committee of the Veterinary Emergency and Critical Care Society (www.veccs.org) since 1998. She is involved with inviting, coordinating, and hosting over 100 internationally recognized speakers at IVECCS and various regional and international conferences. In addition, she is a frequent lecturer at many national and international veterinary conferences. This year she will be developing this year's Jack Mara Memorial Lecture, which highlights the team approach to emergency and critical care medicine and surgery.

Mr. Rivera was a participant speaker at IVECCS held in New Orleans this past September and is invited to speak on nursing issues in Scottsdale next September. His presentations will cover nursing management skills, team approach, and critical monitoring.

Rebecca Kirby, DVM Featured in the Today's Wisconsin Woman Magazine
Dr. Rebecca Kirby is featured in the Today's Wisconsin Woman (TWW) Magazine in "Creature Care - Sick Animals are Dr. Kirby's Mission". The article takes a look inside an animal emergency room. TWW is distributed statewide and is one of the premier sources for information influencing women's lives, family, careers and self. Dr. Kirby is owner of the Animal Emergency Center and is board certified in small animal internal medicine as well as emergency/critical care medicine. Her articles, textbooks, and clinical research have advanced the veterinary profession as well as inspired many to pursue emergency and critical care as their chosen career. Advanced Training in Rigid Endoscopy and Minimally Invasive Surgery at AEC
The Animal Emergency Center specialists and staff veterinarians had the opportunity to learn from the best!! Dr. Clarence Rawlings, DVM, PhD, DACVS, was brought to the Center, as part of the AEC staff continuing education program, to teach the art of rigid endoscopy. Laparscopy, thorascopy, rhinoscopy, and cystoscopy procedures were performed under the direction of one of the best in the world in this field. With over 35 years of experience teaching surgery to a wide range of students (technicians, veterinary students, interns, residents, practitioners, and specialists), Dr. Rawlings has developed several new endoscopic and surgical procedures, and directs the Veterinary Endoscopy Training Symposia at the University of Georgia. We are proud to add this aspect of specialized veterinary care to our list of advanced procedures available at the Animal Emergency Center.

 

AEC Technician First "Civilian" Invited to Teach Military Veterinary Personnel!!!

Mr. Angel Rivera was the guest lecturer at the 51st Veterinary Medical Detachment 91T Conference, held in Kaiserslautern, Germany. Mr. Rivera was flow to Germany to deliver 5 days of comprehensive lectures and laboratories on emergency and critical care for the military handlers of the canine units. Military personnel deployed in Italy, Germany, Kuwait, Spain, and Turkey had the opportunity to take the knowledge and experience from these advanced seminars to use with their canine partners in the field. This was the first time that this conference had invited a civilian as guest lecturer for their military personal, and AEC is proud that they selected Mr. Rivera!!

Current Awards

MILWAUKEE, WI
Animal Emergency Center (AEC)was thrilled to be informed by their Marketing/Advertising Agency, K-Kom Marketing, that they had received a Bell Award fromthe Business Marketing Association (BMA). Judging was based on the BMA Awards Committee, a panel of impartial jdges from corporate advertising management and agencies located throughout the Midwest. The panel’s criteria was based on how well each entry accomplished its stated objectives and an assessment of communications strategy and creative/production values. Congratulations to all involved parties!

Dr. Salmon named "Veterinarian of the Year"

Dr. Sara Salmon, staff veterinarian in the emergency/critical care service at the Animal Emergency Center, was named Veterinarian of the Year for 2007 by the Virginia Veterinary Medical Association. Dr. Salmon was given this honor at the Viriginia State Association meeting in February. The award was given to Dr. Salmon "In recognition of her leadership, inspiration and contributions to the veterinary profession". Congratulations!!

 

 

Dr. Rachel Reiman

Dr. Rachel Reiman has recently taken and passed all 4 parts of the very difficult 2 day examination to become certified as a specialist in veterinary small animal oncology. Once her paper is accepted for publication, she will be recognized as an official diplomate of the American College of Veterinary Internal Medicine, Oncology. Congratulations, Dr. Reiman, on a job well done!

Featured Veterinary Technician in the Veterinary Technician Journal
Mr. Angel Rivera is featured on the cover of the Veterinary Technician Journal that is distributed nationwide and considered the premier journal for veterinary nurses. Angel is the Hospital Administrator at the Animal Emergency Center and has been a skilled veterinary emergency and critical care nurse for over 15 years. In addition to his nursing skills, he is known for his excellence in teaching and presenting new protocols and guidelines.

 

 

September 2006 - AEC Personnel Again at the Forefront of Veterinary Education
The Animal Emergency Center is proud to have had Dr. Elke Rudloff, one of our emergency/critical care specialists, and Mr. Angel Rivera, our hospital administrator and emergency/critical care technician, involved in organizing and lecturing at the world renown International Veterinary Emergency and Critical Care Symposium (IVECCS) in San Antonio in September, 2006.

Mr. Rivera was a participant speaker at the International Veterinary Emergency and Critical Care Symposium (IVECCS) held in San Antonio this past September. Mr. Rivera lectured to technicians on bedside monitoring equipment and techniques; and directed a lab on monitoring equipment. In addition he also participated in a lab for DVMs on EKG monitoring equipment.

This award is presented to Dr. Rebecca Kirby for her outstanding work in promoting companion animal healthcare. Dr. Kirby has been a guiding light in the development and growth of the specialty of emergency medicine. Under her guidance the Emergency Service at the Veterinary Hospital of the University of Pennsylvania developed a reputation for excellence. The care of dogs and cats in critical states involves cutting-edge knowledge of internal medicine, homeostasis, and nutritional support. The relation with pets in this critical situation needs special sensitivity to both the client and patient, since critical care is a particularly stressful situation for the family/pet/veterinary bond. Dr. Kirby has consistently shown exceptional qualities in all of these skills.

Dr. Kirby has demonstrated organizational and leadership talents, as well as being a talented educator of graduate veterinarians. She is an outstanding public speaker and is a much sought after lecturer all over the world. She is dynamic, thought-provoking, and almost evangelical in her ability to motivate and engage her audience. Dr. Kirby's ability to present complex material in relevant ways allowed her to personally influence patient care for countless animals all over the world.Dr. Kirby was fundamentally involved in the creation of the American College of Veterinary Emergency and Critical Care and served on its Board of Regents for many years. She was elected to the office of President of the College from 1995-1997. Her list of publications covers a variety of subjects, all indicating a keen eye for development of the specialty of critical care.Dr. Kirby has been regularly invited to write chapters for books, another way in which she has promoted emergency care as a very important discipline in the care of companion animals.

Milwaukee Business Journal's Women of Inlfuence- Mentor Category
Dr. Rebecca Kirby was named as one of the top 25 Women of Influence for 2003 by the Milwaukee Business Journal. Her award is for the mentor category. Dr. Kirby is recognized as one of the leading teachers and supervisors in the specialty of veterinary small animal emergency and critical care. "Because of her teaching ability, she can turn anybody into the best resident in the U.S." quotes one of her past residents.
