SADIE MAE 'S STORY."Sadie Mae presented for vomiting. She had chewed on a rug from the kitchen floor"

Case Study:

Sadie Mae presented for vomiting. She had chewed on a rug from the kitchen floor the night before and had been seen to swallow some of the rug. The owners had seen a large piece of string from the rug hanging from her mouth after she vomited. On physical exam Sadie Mae was dehydrated and vomited a long piece of string in the exam room.

Sadie Mae was hospitalized to determine the extent of the problems that had been caused by the string ingestion. This is potentially a life-threatening situation since the string can cause a perforation of the bowel, telescoping of the bowel (intussusception), and/or an intestinal obstruction. Intravenous fluids were given to correct her hydration and an ultrasound was performed. The string was found to be causing an intestinal obstruction. Exploratory surgery found that the string from the rug has caused an intussusception as well as the intestinal obstruction. The intussusception was corrected, the string was removed and the obstruction eliminated. Sadie Mae recovered uneventfully in ICU and was discharged a few days later. Sadie Mae has had a full recovery at this time, thanks to the loving care of her family and the staff of AEC!
