What are my options?
Your pet can be cared for in your home by a responsible
friend or professional pet sitter, or can be housed at a pet boarding
facility. Check with your primary care veterinarian regarding their
recommendations for boarding or home care for your pet. Many veterinary
hospitals offer their clients the option to board their pet, especially
if they have an on-going medical condition that requires care. If
your veterinarian does not board at their hospital, ask them for their
recommendations for a boarding facility or pet sitter that will work
closely with their staff should a problem arise.
Be prepared!
The staff of the Animal Emergency Center has prepared
a Pet Travel Information
packet for you to download and complete. This packet will provide
valuable information and instructions to your pet sitter or boarding
facility. In addition, the Pet
Travel Check List will serve as a reminder of things
to do for your pet's care and well-being while you are traveling.
In Case of an Emergency
No one likes to think that an emergency might arise
while they are away from their pet. But, unfortunately, this is a
real possibility. If you are located in the southeastern area of Wisconsin,
your agent needs to know how to get to your primary care veterinarian
or the Animal Emergency Center, if your veterinarian is not available.
Your pet sitter (agent) or the boarding facility needs to have a clear
understanding of your desires for the medical care of your pet should
a crisis arise, and for the financial commitment you are willing to
make as a result of that care. To assist you in this process, we suggest
the following:
- Download and complete
the Pet Travel Information.
- Print out directions from the location
of your home or boarding facility to your primary care veterinarian
and to the Animal Emergency Center. Use our web link to MapQuest
for easy directions to AEC. (Click
here)
- Download and read the cardiopulmonary resuscitation
options (CPR) on the AEC admissions form and indicate your
choice for resuscitation of your pet. Doing this ahead of
time will keep your agent from having to guess your desires
and making a financial commitment on your behalf that you
do not want.
- Download and complete the financial authorization
form if you would like to give your agent authorization for
emergency medical care for your pet at the Animal Emergency
Center while you are traveling. This confidential information
can kept in a sealed envelope by your agent, to be opened
only in case of an emergency. The information can be brought
to AEC or faxed, should the occasion arise.
